Much technology originally developed for the military eventually finds its way into everyday civilian life. “Amazing Grace” Hopper was a mathematician, naval officer, and computer programmer, and was a pioneering woman in the field of computer science. She developed a compiler and several computer languages, working to bring them closer to natural English and away from machine language. Herpetologist and toxinologist Zoltan Takacs was fascinated with snakes as a boy in Hungary and still is. An expert in toxins, he has traveled to more than a hundred countries and caught thousands of reptiles, collecting their venom for screening to see if it can be turned into a lifesaving drug. Enjoy Zoltan’s discussion of his travels and how he and his colleagues have developed a state-of-the-art technology that will provide a novel way to develop new toxin-based drugs for various diseases, everything from cancer to circulatory disorders.
