In conjunction with exhibit, “Votes for Women: Taking Our Place in Politics,” HerStory: Amazing American Pioneers will take place on February 6, 11:30 AM-12:30 PM, in the Chesapeake Theater at Harford Community College. The inclement weather date is February 13 (same time and location).

Through the use of live music, live narration, and archival video, HerStory will feature pioneers who overcame enormous odds and changed the course of history. The lives of Ida B. Wells, Mary Church Terrell, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Stanton, Sojourner Truth, Sara Winnemucca, Sonia Sotomayor, and others will be highlighted.

Following the presentation, guests are invited to a “sneak peek” of the “Votes for Women” exhibit in the Hays-Heighe House. Wax figures of Ida B. Wells and Mary Church are on loan from the National Great Blacks in Wax Museum in Baltimore. From the late 18th through mid-19th century, both women were involved in advocating for the rights of African Americans and women. The figures are on loan for the duration of the “Votes for Women” exhibit in the Hays-Heighe House, February 7 to June 1.

A second event, showings of the documentary Ida B. Wells: A Passion for Justice, will take place at Harford Community College on March 12 in the Student Center, Room 113, at 12:30 and again at 1:40 PM. The film will also be shown on April 18 in the Hays-Heighe House, Room 201, at 12:30 PM. A household name in the African American community during much of her lifetime (1863-1931), Wells was considered the equal of her well-known contemporaries, such as Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois. The documentary features the dramatic life and turbulent times of the pioneering journalist, activist, suffragist and anti-lynching crusader of the post-Reconstruction period. Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison reads selections from Wells’ memoirs and other writings.

The free events, which are open to the public, are sponsored by Soar2Success. Tickets are not required. For disability-related accommodations, contact the Office of Student Life at 443-412-2224 at least 10 calendar days in advance.
