Megan Chenworth

Her advice to other students: “There are so many things to do and ways to get involved on campus. Step out of your comfort zone and find at least one way to get involved!”

Student Megan Chenworth learned the value of getting involved and the satisfaction that comes from helping others through her experience at Harford. She also learned how to balance the responsibilities of being a single mother and a full-time college student. Megan isn’t just pursuing a degree for herself; she’s helping to secure a brighter future for her son.

Her involvement at the College includes working in the Office of Student Life and being a peer educator for the “Owls in Action” Sexual Assault and Violence Education Project. Peer educators are trained in the latest evidence-based preventative practices and are qualified and available to present the bystander intervention program to students, employees and community members. Megan is also the president of the Do Good Club and a member of Emerging Leaders, a program that provides students with the opportunity to participate in leadership activities, workshops, and conferences.

She also served as an orientation leader, helping new students learn about the many campus services and resources that are available to them. Megan enjoyed the satisfaction of helping others and said, “Many students who were in my orientation groups have reached out to say thank you for helping to make them feel more comfortable on campus.”

In January, Megan demonstrated her commitment to community service by participating in the College’s Alternative Break Program in the Florida Keys. During their stay, she and the other members of the HCC team provided valuable assistance to the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and Florida Fish and Wildlife. “I learned how to work as a team with people from many different backgrounds. The experience was something I’d encourage every student to apply for. Without this opportunity, I never would’ve been able to afford a trip to the Keys or see the parts outside of the “tourist” areas. I was able to experience the ‘raw’ and beautiful parts of the Florida Keys.”

Megan is studying Community Health Promotion and intends to complete her associate degree in spring 2021. After she graduates, she plans to transfer to Morgan State University to earn her bachelor’s degree in community health or public health. She would like to work in the public health sector helping low income inner city residents.

She describes her experience at the College in one word: “Amazing!” Her advice to other students: “There are so many things to do and ways to get involved on campus. Step out of your comfort zone and find at least one way to get involved, whether that means getting a job on campus or joining a club!”

Megan said her five-year-old son Ares has been very understanding about her decision to continue her education. He even pretends he’s the one going to college when she drops him off at school in the morning. “I know he sees me working hard for a better future for him.”
