“Get involved on your campus – it’s a great way to build a sense of community and create lasting relationships with others.”
Zach Runge ’17 has a bright future ahead. His experiences at Harford helped propel him on his path to success. He earned a Communications Studies AA degree in May 2017 and a Business Management-Marketing AAS degree in December 2017. Zach was also a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Rho Beta Chapter.
“I think many people treat the learning at a community college as second to ‘real colleges.’ But Zach says he felt just as challenged in his courses at Harford as he does at Towson University, where he is completing a bachelor’s degree. He loved his experience at Harford and felt the campus was the perfect size. “I would recommend HCC to anyone who is considering it. It’s a much less expensive option to complete your gen eds, it offers strong academics, it’s a nice campus with newer technologies, and it has some really great professors.”
“Assistant Professor Miriam Huddleston helped to place me in two marketing internships that greatly enhanced my knowledge and skills in the field, specifically social media marketing. Professor Stephanie Hallock was always there to help, and her courses were what inspired me to pursue a Political Science degree at Towson. In fact, I met with her before making that decision and she offered sound advice, insight, and explained potential careers I could gain within the field. Associate Professor Linda Heil created a wonderful Communication Studies program and her passion for the subject made learning the materials easier and more enjoyable. These three faculty members stand out most to me in achieving my academic goals, and if it were not for their guidance and passion, I may not be where I am today. While they had the most impact, all of the faculty and staff I interacted with were helpful.”
Zach worked in HCC’s Learning Center and earned Level III Certification as a Professional Tutor. “It was one of the best jobs I’ve ever had and helped me gain a peer mentoring position at the Public Communication Center at TU.” He works a second part-time job at TU as a marketing assistant in the Office of Partnerships and Outreach, where he helps create social media posts, collects data on programs and initiatives, assists with email marketing and event planning, and more.
“Transferring from Harford to Towson University was a very easy process, and I came into my first semester at TU feeling prepared, confident, and ready to learn more,” said Zach. He is pursuing an undergraduate degree in both Communication Studies and Political Science and is a member of Sigma Alpha Pi, the National Society of Leadership and Success. He plans to graduate from Towson in fall 2019.
Last summer Zach was awarded the TU Institutional Diversity Study Abroad Scholarship for a three-week study abroad course in Barcelona. “We traveled to a lot of places, including the Sagrada Familia, Montserrat, and the U.S. Consulate; this trip got me interested in becoming a foreign diplomat. This was my first time abroad, and it was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had.” Zach is currently in Scotland for the study abroad course "Identity, Expression, and Social Action."
He offers some advice to other students: “College is one of the most challenging, rewarding, and all-around best experiences for anyone. My advice would be to explore your options, take a variety of classes and see what interests you the most. Stay dedicated to completing your work; even if you are taking a class to simply fill a requirement, there is always something that can be learned and applied in your field. Get involved on your campus – it’s a great way to build a sense of community and create lasting relationships with others. And, most importantly, have fun!”
