What are the Learning Center hours of operation?

During the fall, spring and summer semesters we operate Mon. & Thur. 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m., Tue. & Wed. 8:30 a.m.- 5 p.m., Fri. 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m., and Sat. 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. The center operates at a reduced schedule in between semesters and during the winter term.

Who is eligible to receive learning assistance?

The Learning Center is available for Harford Community College students enrolled in credit or continuing education courses.

Do you provide assistance for the placement test (Accuplacer)?

The Learning Center can help you review for the Academic Skills Assessment. We encourage students to use the Official ACCUPLACER Study App loaded on the iPads that we have available for students to use in the Learning Center. While we do not teach content, we can help refresh what you may have forgotten. We can also provide test-taking strategies.

The Learning Center does not provide assistance for standardized tests such as TEAS, PRAXIS, CLEP, or SATs.

How can I get assistance with learning strategies and study skills?

Please contact Joshlin Sheridan, Student Success Specialist, at 443-412-2427 or to schedule an appointment. She is a valuable resource for learning strategies and study skills. She meets individually with students to develop Student Success Plans.

What types of learning assistance sessions are available?

  • Remote Drop-In sessions - Offered in the Learning Center. Learning assistants are available in the center to assist multiple students at a time. This is a free service and no appointment is needed.
  • Remote Group and Supplemental Instruction sessions - Available for high demand courses. These sessions are scheduled via MS Teams by their instructors. CLICK HERE to book a session.
  • Remote Individual sessions - Available for students demonstrating academic need. An appointment is needed to complete a Success Plan and determine eligibility to receive this service. Students must meet with Joshlin Sheridan, Student Success Specialist. There is no cost for the first 15 hours. After this, students pay at a rate of $12 per hour.
  • Live online sessions (NetTutor) - The service is provided by NetTutor. Please visit our Online Learning Assistance page for more information.

How do I request individual learning assistance?

The Learning Center provides individual learning assistance to students demonstrating academic need. You may be considered for individual learning sessions if:

  • Repeating course
  • Less than C average in previous attempt in course or prerequisite
  • Cumulative GPA less than 2.0
  • Referred by your instructor or Disability Support Services
    Received a deficiency notice

Individual learning assistance is provided only as a part of a Student Success Plan. Please contact Joshlin Sheridan or fill out the request form for individual sessions. Please check the timelines since the last day to request individual learning assistance coincides with the last day to withdraw from classes.

What is the cost of receiving individual learning sessions?

Walk-in sessions in the center and group sessions are available for HCC students enrolled in the current semester. These sessions are free of charge.

Individual sessions are available to students demonstrating academic need and are provided free of charge for the first twelve hours. After the first twelve hours, students pay at a rate of $12 per hour.

Does HCC offer assistance for ESL, ABE, or GED?

ESL, ABE, GED classes are available at HCC. For more information, please contact:, 443-412-2054, or visit the Continuing Education Website. Assistance is available in the Learning Center for students taking these classes at HCC. ESL students who are currently enrolled at HCC can request additional ESL assistance at 443-412-2616.

How do I become a learning assistant?

If you are interested in becoming a learning assistant, you must have successfully completed at least six credits of college level courses, demonstrated mastery of subject area with at least a B average, and have excellent communication skills. If interested, please complete the Online Employment Application and attach a cover letter and resume.
