January 2019 Alternative Winter Break - Houston, TX

Eleven students participated in this program, which immersed participants in the past, present and future of Key West, Florida and allowed them to be an integral part of the environmental stewardship and community rebuilding in the Florida Keys after Hurricane Irma.  Participants volunteered doing marine debris cleanup and coral reef restoration work with the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) and partners like Florida Fish and Wildlife, Mote Marine Laboratory, and Florida Boys Scouts.  The students’ work was even covered in a local Florida newspaper (link: https://www.acenewstoday.com/harford-community-college-students-helped-with-florida-keys-beach-cleanup-for-their-winter-break/).

June 2019 Alternative Summer Break - Rome, Italy

Thirteen students participated in this international volunteer trip to Rome, Italy.  While there, students volunteered with Kim Onlus, an organization that provides housing and assistance to families in need of specialized medical care.  Children come from all over the world to stay at this facility, which is run by a small, dedicated staff and local volunteers.  Harford students assisted with projects around the facility, like creating a new outdoor walkway, and organized a special play day for the children.  While in Italy, students were able to experience the local sights like the Colosseum, Forum, Pantheon, and even tour the Vatican museums.
